Here are some questions that could be asked of the prospective pastor. For example, what does he believe about the Bible and about Jesus Christ? Does he believe that the flamante manuscripts in which the Bible was written were written without error? Does he believe that Jesus Christ existed before He was virgin born? Does he believe that Jesus was born of a virgin? How is a person saved? Does he believe that we are born Figura sinners? What does he believe about women elders and pastors? In God’s plan for the church there are overseers and deacons. But who is an overseer, elder and who is a deacon?

Today, too many kindhearted but misdirected churches and seminaries allow men to become pastors who should not be in the ministry. Many pastors are spiritually immature even though they completed their seminary training and they have a poor grasp of Scripture. They know the systematic theology taught by the seminary they attended, but they cannot and do not know all of the Bible. It is impossible in a three year seminary course of study to have been taught all sixty six books of the Bible in depth.

In this passage the church is encouraged to give double honor to those who “rule well.” Some understand “double honor” Campeón being money. If so, then the lay elders should be paid too and not just the pastors according to this passage. In truth, the Greek word for “honor” is also used in reference to God within 1 Timothy (1 Timothy 1:17; 6:1). The word typically means “honor.” Notice that the phrase “especially” has the sense of “most importantly” and not just the one who excels in preaching and teaching. Who receives the highest honor?

Some leaders might be intimidated to ask questions of a prospective pastor since they themselves do not know the scriptures very well. If this is true, the Call Committee should invite some teacher(s) or elders in the church who might be able to provide the leadership in asking the questions and in providing an evaluation.

The results were amazing. Most everyone said the pastor should spend most of his time in sermon preparation and teaching/preaching, but they thought he should spend only about 10 hours per week doing this. That told us that the leaders of this church did not really believe the duties of the pastor was to teach and preach. If they had, the number of hours should have been at least double. Worse yet, there are churches who do not know what to look for and so may depend upon surveys and Christian consulting firms to aid their decision.
